“You are my refuge and strength. You are my hiding place. You hear my voice when I call, before I say anything at all. In desperate need I cry, only to realize the hand the heals the sick, has my name written on it” Those words are written by Sonicflood in their song appropriately titled “Psalm 91” and they are very similar to the words written in Psalm 91. “If you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will ever conquer you, no plague will ever come near your home. For he will order angels to protect you wherever you go. They will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone… The Lord says, I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them. I will reward them with a long live and give them my salvation.” (9-12, 14-16) What does it mean to make the Lord your refuge and your shelter? Let’s take a closer look. According to Webster’s Dictionay (WD), the word “shelter”, refers to “something that covers, or affords protection, a state of being covered or protected, or to constitute or provide protection for.” Some synonyms are: refuge, retreat, sanctuary, asylum, cover, security, protection. Wow! God not only shelters us, he provides shelter for us. He provides a place where we can go and be strengthened, protected, encouraged. We can find security, and sanctuary with him. The word “refuge”, according to WD, is “a shelter or protection from danger or distress; A place that provides shelter or protection; State of being covered or protected. Hmmm…. God definitely does this! Some synonyms for this are asylum, harborage, sanctuary, shelter, and haven. God is our refuge! - A place where we can go for shelter, and protection especially in times of distress. Hmmmm…. I wonder why the term asylum keeps coming up? I think it is because knowing God provides the sanity that is desperately needed in this chaotically insane world. What do you think? Yep. I think that’s why. So, all of that being said, making God your refuge and your shelter is trusting Him and allowing him to cover you with protection, encouragement, security, and peace. When the storms in life rage against you, where do you turn? Have you found shelter and refuge in God or are you trying to battle the storms alone?
