One thing I really admire about David is his unwavering faith and confidence in God. When David was dealing with some pretty difficult things in his life and his enemies were constantly after him; he never lost sight of what was important - his relationship with God. David consistently praised God even amidst some scary circumstances. He never forgot who was ultimately in control of his life and who had the power to save him. He knew that God heard him when he cried out and he knew that God would keep his promises. Psalm 57 is no different from any of his other Psalms in illustrating David’s unwavering faith and confidence in God. He knew God would protect him. “Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me. I look to you for protection. I will hide beneath the shadow of your wings” (1) He knew God would keep his promises. “I cry out to God Most High, to God who will fulfill his purpose for me” (2) He knew that God would rescue him. “He will send help from the heaven to rescue me, disgracing those who hound me. My God will send forth his unfailing love and faithfulness” (3) Even though David was being threatened by his enemies he still praised God. “I am surrounded by fierce lions who greedily devour human prey –whose teeth pierce like spears and arrows, and whose tongues cut like swords. Be exalted, O God, above the highest heavens! May your glory shine over all the earth.” (4-5) David had such great confidence in God and I am sure this is what helped him to keep his focus on God amidst his difficult circumstances. “My heart is confident in you, O God, my heart is confident. Wake up my heart! Wake up, O lyre and harp! I will wake the dawn with my song. I will thank you, Lord, among all the people. I will sing your praises among the nations. For your unfailing love is as high as the heavens. Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. Be exalted, O God, above the highest heavens. May your glory shine over all the earth” (7-11) I truly believe that the key to remaining faithful and confident in the Lord in all circumstances lies within David’s example. Praising God in all circumstances and never taking our focus off the one who gives us life; the one who loves us greatly and freely, is how we can remain faithful to him. This is how we can be as confident as David. This is how we can remain strong when things come our way that threaten to knock us down. This is how we can press on. Press on!
