Psalm 106 is not only a story about God’s faithfulness, but it is also a story about humanity’s sinfulness. Even when the Israelites chose to go their own way, time and time again and it angered God, he still chose to show compassion and mercy and love to them. “Again and again he rescued them, but they chose to rebel against him, and they were finally destroyed by their sin. Even so, he pitied them in their distress and listened to their cries. He remembered his covenant with them and relented because of his unfailing love.” (43-45) Most of us know of the many times the Israelites chose to rebel against God and how they chose to go their own way instead of listening to what God was telling them. How many of us are really willing to recall all the times we have rebelled against God? How many times have we forgotten what God has done for us? If we took the time to think about these things, we would be able to see just how faithful God has been to us. We would also see just how sinful we have been. I am far from perfect. I have sinned quite a bit in my life and I have gone after what I wanted instead of what would honor God. Remembering all that I have done to rebel against a God who loves me so much causes me to be much more thankful for all the forgiveness, mercy, and love that he has offered to me, not because I deserve it, but because he wanted to. God is faithful to us even when we are so very unfaithful to him. Think about the Israelites and how many times they just weren’t getting what God was trying to teach them. Think about all the times they rebelled against God and went their own way. Then recall all the times you have done so yourself. God has been faithful to you and to me, even if we fail to recognize his faithfulness. Take some time today to reflect on God’s faithfulness towards you and thank him for never leaving you or forsaking you. He loves you enough to be faithful to you despite your sinfulness. Do you love him enough to praise him for it? “Praise the Lord! Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.” (1)
