My absolute favorite song is “How Can I Keep from Singing” by Chris Tomlin. When I was going through a really difficult time in my life, I listened to this song over and over again, singing and weeping as I listened to the words and what they were saying. “There is an endless song, echoes in my soul. I hear the music ring. And though the storms may come I am holding on and to the Rock I cling. How can I keep from singing Your praise? How can I ever say enough? How amazing is Your love? How can I keep from shouting Your name? I know I am loved by the King and it makes my heart want to sing. I will lift my eyes in the darkest night for I know my Savior lives. And I will walk with You knowing You’ll see me through and sing the songs You give. How can I keep from singing Your praise? How can I ever say enough? How amazing is Your love? How can I keep from shouting Your name? I know I am loved by the King and It makes my heart want to sing” In Psalm 28, David is crying out to God to save him from his enemies yet again and he is asking him not to abandon him, but near the end of the Psalm all of David’s perseverance and trust in God has paid off. “Praise the Lord for he has heard my cry for mercy. The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust him with all my heart. He helps me and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving.” (7) David did indeed trust the Lord with all his heart and that is so very evident in all the psalms he has written. He was definitely a man after God’s own heart. He loved God dearly and that showed in how he lived his life, he wasn’t perfect, but his devotion to the Lord was clearly evident. I’ve realized in my own personal life that even through the painful things that come my way, God is working. He is still good. He is still on his throne and he is still in control. Even when things look terrifying and hopeless, I still I have a reason to burst out in song! God is still God. He never changes. He loves me just the same all the time. When I am helping an elderly woman with her groceries or when I am irritable and yelling in my car at one who is going under the speed limit in front of me – God loves me just the same. My circumstances will change, but God will never change. He will always remain the same. So, “I can sing in the troubled times. Sing when I win. I can sing when I lose my step and I fall down again. I can sing ‘cause you pick me up. Sing ‘cause you’re there. I can sing ‘cause you hear me Lord when I call to you in prayer. I can sing with my last breath sing for I know that I’ll sing with the angels and the saints around the throne” The next time you are faced with a difficult day, I challenge you to think of God and how much he loves you and then see how difficult it is to not burst out into song.
